Welcome

Hello,

Thanks for taking the time to find me.

On here I'll be leaving general musings from the world of HF/VHF amateur radio from my perspective, also any reports of mobile/portable operations I do as well as from my QTH in Stockton on Tees.

I'm am member of the RSGB, UKSMG, WAB book #19286, GQRP #13571 and a "friend of" BARTG and a member Stockton and district ARG (G4XXG) if you fancy popping along if you're in the area we meet at:

Billingham community Centre
The Causeway
Billingham

We meet from 1930 - 2100 every Wednesday during term time and do run courses from time to time.

I can be heard
on 2 and 6m and on HF. On 2 I'm usually on my local repeaters GB3IR, GB3CD and internet links MB7IMR and MB7ISC with SSB ops also on 2/6m. HF ops are more frequent now on PSK as I've found a solution to my lack of garden space...!!

Been a while...! and a new record...!

Well it's been a while since I last posted and quite a bit has happened in that time. Went to Newark on Oct 1st and finally got my hands on an FT817. Also got a 20m longwire antenna which I mounted in my loft "Lazy Z" configuration. I finally got my WAB book and a few ancillary bits. My old 6m fishing pole antenna has now found a new QTH with my friend Tony (M6AAJ), the reason behind me not doing much radio of late is time...I have had NONE...! well not much too myself anyway so after receiving a call from fellow club member and friend Nigel G8ILB to say my 706 was now freshly tuned up I thought I'd have a blast out on PSK this morning...flicked around the bands to find 10m bouncing with PSK...excellent as I'd heard 10m has been busy for the last few days/weeks...!

So, floating about 28.120.00 I noticed a PSK signal high up and clicked on it...4K7Z (Azerbaijan) was loud and I mean LOUD...lovely clear signal I just HAD to land this one...! so after a few QSO's with other stations he had a QSO with an SP (Poland) station which meant his beam (if indeed he was using one) was pointed over this way...I acted fast and he came back to me with "QRZ M3H??" I couldn't believe my luck...straight away I was back and sending RST, LOC and QTH details at which point he gave me a 100% CPI and gave me his details...so for the record.

Call:- 4K7Z (Azerbaijan)
Loc:- LN40xj
Distance:- 2525 miles...!!!!

My deepest thnx to Igor for the QSO...!

New record...

Hi all,

Over the weekend I was operating 20m PSK as MR3HSJ with a bit of success. I was quite happy bumbling along answering CQ calls and calling CQ myself (it was busy as it was International Marconi day). At approx 1200z I answered a call from UA6BRD who had a nice strong signal. It was only when I looked him up on QRZ and put his locator into the "mapper" software on HRD that I realised I'd beat my old record...Happy bunny indeed, so for the record :-

Call :- UA6BRD
Locator :- LN05gk
Distance:- 1934.8 miles

Many thanks to Igor for coming back to my CQ call...

Notice of Variation

Hi all,

Well I decided to be all patriotic and apply for the "Royal wedding" callsign mentioned in an earlier post via G4ILO's blog site. I got my NoV confirmation through earlier today via email and downloaded it duly. So details are as follows:-

29th April - 9th May 2011 M3HSJ will be transmitting as MR3HSJ.

I'll be using 2m and HF (mainly 14.070 on PSK) so if you see me on a cluster or see my call on the waterfall or hear me on 2m, give me a QSO for my log and yours...!

World radio day

Well what a busy day on 20m PSK today has been...

I switched my radio on approx 0930 as the XYL was at work all day I thought I'd play radio not realising it was WRD...! I thought there was something happening when I looked at the waterfall and seen 20m busier than normal...it was only after my initial QSO's it clicked (after being prompted by an Italian op...!). Great, may get some exotica into my log book. Got and heard the usual countries to start with Italy, Spain, Germany et al and that was pretty much run of the mill, best not forget the Ukranian contingent who were on in abundance...!

I lasted until about 1400hrs and made a handful of QSO's in that time flicking between 20 - 30m with not much going on on the latter I stuck to 20m. After doing what I had to do elsewhere it was back to business. 20 was still bouncing with signals on 14.070Mhz so I stopped on there for a while before having to take a  break approx 1800hrs back on again approx 2000hrs and lasted until just before midnight. Again it was the usual suspects in terms of DXCC entities on the band but I did manage to land a contact in Macedonia...a first for me. Then a couple of DX calls rolled in strong K2CAF and Venezuela rolled in about 2230hrs...I tried and tried to make contact but it was all in vain...nevermind...!

One thing I have noticed though, if you use www.hrdlog.net they have a PSK signal reporter on there so you can see who can hear you, I was amazed to see station KK1D on the East coast of America could hear me...I was impressed and this spurred me to stay on that little bit longer. After all was said and done I had a pretty good day on PSK today about 20 QSO's which I didn't think was bad (things happen slowly in my world, I'll search for contacts rather than call "CQ CQ CQ" all the time...the ratio is somewhere in the region approx 7:1 in favour of chasing contacts over calling "cq" ) but I'm happy with my day and it's all in the log which is what counts...

Anyway 73's and good DX

Callsigns for Royal Wedding

This was taken from G4ILO's blog (a link to this blog is in the side bar)

"The RSGB has negotiated with Ofcom to allow UK radio amateurs to use a special call to celebrate the wedding of H.R.H. Prince William and Catherine Middleton. The call may be used during a period of 11 days from the date of the wedding, 29 April 2011, until 9 May 2011. The call will use the letter "R" after the first letter of the call, replacing the regional designator for Scotland, Ireland, Wales etc. where used. So G4AAA would become GR4AAA, 2E0ABC would become 2R0ABC, GM3ZZZ would be GR3ZZZ and so on.

UK licensed amateurs wishing to use the special call must apply for a Notice of Variation (NoV) to their license. This NoV may only be applied for online using a simple online form and the NoV will be delivered by email. Who says that the RSGB is not progressive?"

Might be worthwhile looking for these special callsigns for the logbook...!

New record

Well it's been a LONG time since I last posted on here...too long in fact...!

Well I decided to do a little radio tonight and as the Mrs was in the mode of choice was PSK. So I fire everything up and turn the dial to 14.070MHz and had a look around the waterfall, which incidentally was quite busy. Had a few QSO's with the resident Italian stations who always seem to be on 20m PSK and caught Vladimir (US5CCO) in the Ukraine and had a quick QSO with him...then another station from the Ukraine popped up asking me frantically to "pse k"...sure no problem. After a bit of repeating callsigns we finally made contact, Vladimir (UR51CG). We quickly exchanged sigs reports and bid 73's...it was only when I put his locator (KN87uw) into the "Mapper" program on HRD that I realised this was a new record for me beating my previous best with my SSB QSO with 9H4DX (Malta JM76da) which was 1487 miles. So for the record:-

Callsign:- UR51CG
Country:- Ukraine
Locator:- KN87uw
Distance:- 1728.7 miles...!!

So I'll say thank you to Vladimir UR51CG for breaking my old record...! Much appreciated...!

Now I know there's ops out there will scoff at this but I'm still only an M3...I'm using a 6m vertical fishing pole antenna mounted <12" off the ground and when I looked at my ATU my indicated TX power was a smidgen over 5W...!! Not bad I think...!!

73's and good DX one and all

144 RSGB Affiliated society contest

Hi everyone,

Yes it has been a while since I last posted and the truth is I just haven't done much radio lately, but I seen this contest advertised and thought "I'll give that a go..." as I'd gained a certificate for leading "M3" in the 144 trophy back in September.

So I set my 20' portable mast up against my fence with a 2/70 whip on top, now I know there may be a few of you reading this thinking "you should of used a beam" and you're right I should've as I do own a 4ele yagi but that would've meant running outside to turn it as I don't have a rotator as of yet...that and the fact I used the very same whip in the 144 trophy...! So after setting up I quickly flicked on my TS780 (which I got given..!!) and wound it round to 144.300 usb, fired up the laptop and got my contesting software loaded and ready with a couple of minutes to spare quite literally...!!

0900 came and I listened on 144.300 for a bit, gave a few CQ calls but nothing so I went chasing, and flitted around the band listening for CQ calls so I could start filling my log (I was pretty confident), but nothing...I just thought it was a slow start so persevered a bit longer but after an hour or so of nothing...not even a weak signal, I decided to call it a day without making a QSO and after looking at the claimed scores on the RSGB it wasn't my equipment as a few entrants claim "poor condx" and "very little UK activity" which I think is a shame really...oh well try again in the new year...!
